National Day of Action Against Sexual Harassment

On 29 April, the University of Lucerne will once again take part in Sexual Harassment Awareness Day - a nationwide initiative at Swiss universities. By doing so, the University reaffirms its commitment to respectful interaction and takes a clear stand against all forms of sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment can take many forms – from suggestive comments and unwelcome physical contact to inappropriate behaviour in digital spaces. It impacts not only individuals, but also the broader working and learning environment. This is why the University of Lucerne is actively committed to promoting a respectful and safe university culture, and has been offering comprehensive information and support services for over ten years.

"Prohibited and not tolerated"

In its policy statement, the University commits to taking firm action against sexual harassment. It states, among other things: "Sexual harassment is prohibited and will not be tolerated by the University of Lucerne, neither as an employer nor as a teaching, learning and research institution."

A guide for staff outlines how to recognise sexual harassment, what courses of action are available, and who to contact. This is complemented by an e-learning tool designed to raise awareness and provide more in-depth information on the topic.

Specially trained confidential counsellors are available to anyone affected by sexual harassment, whether directly or indirectly. This includes those who experience harassment, those who commit it, managers, those falsely accused, and bystanders. The four counsellors will take no further steps without the express consent of the individual concerned. Alternatively, the university’s investigating body can be contacted directly.

Initial project management in Lucerne

The first annual Sexual Harassment Awareness Day was held in 2023. At that time, the project was managed by the Office of Equal Opportunity at the University of Lucerne as part of the swissuniversities programme "P-7 Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunity in Higher Education Development (2021–2024)".

As part of this year’s awareness day, members of the University and other interested parties are invited to join a public online session on the topic: "What works? What helps? – Dealing with sexism and sexual harassment at universities" (12:15–1:15 p.m.).
